Why should you choose this particular study programme?

Aging of the population is one of humanity’s greatest achievements. At the same time, however, it is also one of the most important challenges. Understanding population’s aging and the diseases of this period of life is one of the issues that preoccupy the global scientific community today more than anything else. This is because the numbers of people belonging to the third age are increasing at a rapid rate. Significant and many changes have been made in relation to this age group. These changes are mainly demographic, social and economic, while they have also brought significant contrasts in the way third age affects society.

Although demographic aging is not a new phenomenon, nowadays it has assumed alarming proportions mainly due to the dramatic decline in the birth rate that followed the post-war “baby boom.”. In the upcoming decades Europe and EU will be increasingly threatened by these dangerous demographic trends. Recent demographic changes mean that member states will experience a strong aging population in perhaps different ways and to different degrees each. However, all states will suffer consequences in the areas of economy, social protection and dialogue between social partners.

As a result of the interdependence of various factors and, above all, the specific conditions prevailing in each country, there is no right answer as to how we will best adapt our social systems to the impending demographic changes.

Both the question of economic performance and those of employment and social protection are a source of particular concern for all member states of the EU. The type of demographic changes currently taking place in Europe prompts research into the effects previously observed in similar distortions of the age pyramid. At the European Commission in Brussels, they believe that an in-depth analysis of the relevant developments and statistical data is required. This study should form the basis for the formulation of other interdependent policies (such as the policy for employment and social protection) as well as the material for calculating the possible future effects in the above sectors.

According to the above, the necessity for trained scientists at postgraduate level in Greece and the European Union in the specific subject is imperative.
