Learning Outcomes

This course aims to equip students with knowledge related to the role of the environment in life, activity and health in older adults, as well as skills related to the promotion of autonomy of this population.

 

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Identify key introductory issues related to the environment and the UN’s sustainable development agenda.
  • Describe programs and living structures for older adults (community, long-term care structures, social protection structures).
  • Recognize the importance of falls in older adults, as well as organizing environmental arrangements to prevent them.
  • Describe the impact of the natural environment on the health of older adults, as well as to organize, implement and evaluate related prevention programs.
  • Recognize the role of work environments in safety and health, as well as the impact of retirement on the mental and physical health of older adults.
  • Identify the relationship of the elderly with health systems, as well as to propose and design health systems friendly to the geriatric patient.
  • Organize, propose and implement changes and modifications in hospitals and rehabilitation centers to make them friendly to the geriatric patient.
  • Recognize activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and their relationship to autonomy in older adults.
  • Identify factors associated with autonomy in older adults.
  • Implement and evaluate intervention programs to prevent impairment of autonomy and limitation of functionality.
