Learning Outcomes

This course aims to provide students with knowledge related to neurodegenerative diseases in older adults, as well as skills related to the prevention of neurodegenerative disorders in this population and promotion of health and functionality.

 

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Identify basic introductory issues about neurodegenerative diseases (conceptual demarcation, historical evidence).
  • Identify basic introductory issues about the CNS, PNS and the effects of aging on these systems.
  • Describe the economic and social costs of neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Recognize the main categories of neurodegenerative diseases encountered in older adults, as well as describe diagnostic criteria, psychometric tools, atypical manifestations in older adults, prognosis, and treatment options (psychotherapeutic interventions and medication options) by diagnostic category.
  • Recognize the importance of the multidisciplinary team in the management of geriatric patients with neurodegenerative disorders and describes the role of key specialties.
  • Describe WHO guidelines, as well as intervention programs aimed at preventing neurodegenerative diseases and especially neurocognitive disorders.
  • Recognize the aging process of the brain, its potential for neuroplasticity, as well as neurorehabilitation interventions
