Learning Outcomes

This course aims to equip students with knowledge and skills related to the biology of aging and pathophysiology in a geriatric population.

 

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Understand key components and issues related to public health and its relationship to the older adult population.
  • Recognize and use evidence-based methods in research and daily clinical practice.
  • Identify the key indicators of health in old age.
  • Identify the mechanisms and theories surrounding aging, as well as the factors that contribute to it.
  • Recognize the major medical conditions encountered in the older adult population, their symptomatology, and methods of treatment and/or management.
  • Identify and understand the basic principles, methods and tools of geriatric assessment and proceed with their practical application.
  • Identify the importance of prevention in the older adult population and the relevant vaccines targeted at this age group.
  • Identify key health issues in the geriatric population: heart problems, strokes, metabolic disorders and diabetes.
  • Recognize the aging process of the brain, its potential for neuroplasticity, as well as neurorehabilitation interventions.
  • Understand key women’s health issues in older adults.
  • Identify specific health-related issues in older adults (dental health and common dental problems, allergies).
  • Recognize the importance and function of an interdisciplinary team in an older adult population and to put this knowledge into practice.
